Changes to job keeper and insolvency laws

The changes are based on United States’ Chapter 11 laws which allow businesses with liabilities of less than $1 million to stay in charge while they deal with their debts.

The overhaul comes amid dire predictions a ‘wave’ of small businesses will go under as they lose access to government-funded COVID-19 support packages. Millions of staff and their employers are due to lose access to the $101 billion JobKeeper taxpayer-funded scheme.

The JobKeeper wage subsidy will drop from $1500 per fortnight to $1200 for full-time workers, and $750 per fortnight for part-time workers, from September 28.

‘Responsible’ lending laws to be axed

The simplification will remove the Australian Securities and Investments Commission from enforcing the responsible lending rules for banks and other mainstream lenders while bolstering ASIC’s oversight of payday lenders for vulnerable borrowers.
